Dreams keep us going. Without them, life would be meaningless. Don’t think you have any? Maybe your goals aren’t big enough.
Seth Godin mentions in a recent post about passion that, “Excitement about our goals is often diminished by… the drudgery of work”. When we are not working in our passion, the drudgery of the work begins to overwhelm us. We often have the creativity and passion beaten out of us by jobs we hate. If not hate, then a job we have no passion for, which is often worse. We will leave a job we hate, but we will tolerate a passionless existence for years, watching our life drift away.
What can we do? Are we to sacrifice our lives to making a living, just surviving? Are we to abandon our dreams?
What can we do? We can find our passion. We can focus all of our energy into that passion. We must make sacrifices. We must do the work. We must utilize our passion and channel that energy into being remarkable in that passion. We must, as Seth puts, be linchpins.
Our dreams must be big enough to stir our hearts. They must be monumental. As Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said
Dream no small dreams for they have no power to move the hearts of men.
What do you dream about? Is it your retirement? Is it travel? Is it the mark you will leave on the world? Dream big or don’t dream at all.
