Can You Etch It – South Dakota

Welcome to Can You Etch It, the web’s first laser engraving series that specializes in laser engraving strange, unique, and even common items. Today I’ll engrave South Dakota.  Well, maybe not ALL of South Dakota; it won’t fit into the laser.  I’ll just have to settle for a refrigerator magnet.

South Dakota is one of those state that has a lot to offer.  My mom grew up there. My dad was stationed there in the Air Force.  They have the Badlands, the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Memorial, Deadwood, and much, much more.  I have been several times as a child and have fond memories.  What better way to remember those good times than with a personalized souvenir.

Souvenirs remind us of our travels.  Often, they are expensive and low quality but they are often the only choice we have.  Well, I have decided to do something about that.

One of our favorite souvenirs has been refrigerator magnets in the shape of the states we have visited.  When we can find them, the quality and size have been inconsistent and the prices, higher than they should be.  I always wanted magnets that are geographically accurate, fit together well, and have a good amount of detail.  One of the benefits of having a laser engraver is the ability to make at least some of your wishes come true.

What started it all

One of the things that began my journey toward laser engraving was a refrigerator magnet from The Great Platte River Road Archway Monument in Nebraska.  It does not have a great amount of shading or detail, but the accuracy of the cuts are amazing.  I purchased that magnet back in 2001 and never forgot how amazing laser engraving could be.

Why laser engrave South Dakota?

On the long list of ways laser engraving can make my life more interesting, having souvenir frig magnets in the shape of states I have visited has been on the list for a long time.  Not only can you have personalized souvenirs, but consider these other uses:

  • Learning tools for teachers and homeschooling families
  • Puzzles for young children
  • Name tags for family reunions
  • Plus many others
The list is only limited by our imaginations.  Consider having earrings in the shape of Texas or a lapel pin from each state you have visited.  The great benefit to laser engraving is being able to personalize the result. Even if you don’t care for the frig magnet idea, the design could be engraved onto cell phones, iPads, and a variety of other items.

Here is the video showing the magnet being engraved.  The design features an image of Mount Rushmore, The Crazy Horse Memorial, and a marker for Caputa, the town where my mom grew up.  You can see the result at the end of the video.  For more pictures, check out the end of the post.
