We are all an expert at something

I’m an expert, you’re an expert, wouldn’t you like to be an expert too?  Sometimes I don’t feel like an expert, especially when I read about all the great things others are doing online. They are building six figure businesses, blogs with hundreds of thousands of visits per month in only a year, or lifestyle businesses providing themselves a great side income.  So how can I be an expert?

My brother is an expert diver, at least, he is to me.  He knows most likely more than I will ever know about diving.  He has dove in quarries and even in a NASA tank.  He is an expert because he knows more that me.

To many people, I am an expert blogger.  Ok, ok, stop laughing… are you finished yet?  I have built two blogs and a business online (the business is more of a hobby as I have not made any money yet, but if you want to buy something) which is more than most people I know.  To my friend who is considering starting a blog, I am an expert.  He knows very little and I seemingly know it all (or at least, a bunch).

My mom knits socks.  She has sent many pair overseas to our soldiers via the Socks for Soldiers program.  I can go buy socks for about $2 a pair at many of the large discount stores.  I have even paid $8 a pair for some outstanding socks that last for years and years.  Yet, I would not take any amount of money for the socks my mom knits.  Every year, she spends hours upon hours knitting socks and other items for the children and grandchildren.  How many of us can do that?  Not many, I’ll bet.  She is a knitting expert.

Be an expert

Being an expert does not mean being the best in the world, it mean knowing more and having experienced more than the people you are interacting with.  The standard rule is that it take 10,000 hours of focused practice to be considered world-class at an activity, but you don’t have to be world-class to be an expert. We are all experts in something.

What have you spent a lot of time doing?  I’m not talking about watching TV, playing video games, or surfing the web, but the things you have a passion for.  How can you share that with the world?  If you are not sharing your passion with the world, not only are you not happy, but the world is missing out on the wonderful things you could be offering.

Yes, you can share your passions.  You can share them as an expert.  You can do it.  You have permission.  What are you waiting for?
